If you are planning on spending a few days in Toledo, and interested in wine, then you should arrange to visit the following bodegas located in the countryside nearby.
This 500 hectare wine estate, dating from the 18th-century, is located within a 30-minute drive north of the city, just to the west of the village of Bargas. Wine was first produced on the land in the 11th century. Visits, for a maximum of 10 people, are available Monday through Saturday by appointment only, and include a tasting of 3 wines. A wine tasting course, lasting 1-1/2 hours, is available for a maximum of 6 people.

This beautiful estate, considered one of the most important in the region, is located about an hour’s drive west of Toledo, a few minutes south of Malpica del Tajo, in the Pusa River Valley, for which the estate is named. It has been in the Marqués de Griñón’s family since the end of the 13th century, and first opened its doors to the public in 2009. Contact them to arrange a tour of the winery and estate, and enjoy a gastronomic lunch.

The avant-garde, cutting edge winery, in the rolling landscape of Otero, 30 minutes drive west of Toledo, is part of the González Byass’ experience in winemaking. This new winery and vineyard, designed by Architect Gonzalo Tello to be integrated into the landscape, similar to a traditional Bordeaux Château, opened to the public in May 2006. The cellar houses 1200 oak barrels, comprised on nearly 50% American oak and 50% French, on five levels. Tours (1-1/2 hours) and tastings, and a walk through the vineyards, are available Monday-Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm by reservation only.

About an hour’s drive to the east you’ll find this beautiful “hacienda” style, wine estate in La Guardia de Toledo. The dream of Fausto González, La Finca Campo Martuela was first planted in 1990. The winery was finished in 2002, in time for its first harvest. Martúe is one of the most exciting wines to have emerged from wine region of La Mancha. Open for visits Monday-Friday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Reservations required.
